The parts of the story I remember are; it was based in the near future, in the story there was a passage about how she(the main character) was watching a ballet on tv but the dancers all were wearing weights so that they couldnt be good enough to make someone jealous, the people that were smart had to wear helmets that prevented them from thinking. I would really like to find the name of this story and the author.

These are all good answers but I believe it was a short read and not a huge novel. Something you could read and understand if you were in junior high school. I am wanting to get a younger person into reading more of the type of novels you listed.

That would be Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron".

This is driving me crazy, because I know that story, I remember reading it in high school, but now I can't think of the title or author! I want to say Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury but I don't think that is right. I hope someone can answer this because now I want to know too! :)

Edited: Lady Macbeth is correct. Check out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Bergeron

The story you're describing was written by Kurt Vonnegut, but I can't remember either the story title or the name of the collection.

Lady Macbeth is right. It is Harrison Bergeron. I believe Sean Astin played the lead.

Sounds sort of like Brave New World-- Aldous Huxley. I may be wrong on that one though
