Did you keep in a vase, bowl, or anything other than a fish tank with a filter and a heater? That's probably the leading cause of betta deaths, improper housing.

Bettas don't have a very long lifespan anyway. My question is this...Did it have a foggy mass around it's mouth? Mine did and I discoverd it was an illness called Ick..spell check? It causes them to not be bale to eat. But if that wasn't the case, maybe it was the water temp, food, or maybe it became ill.

Did your condition the water. Tap water had chlorine in it. Altho bettas are strong fish, they can die in unconditioned water.
