I am thinking about going back to school for teaching, but in my speech classes I was always TERRIFIED to stand-up in front of the classroom. Is this a natural feeling at first? Does it feel different when you're in front of children? Does this mean I will be a bad teacher or won't succeed?

You'll be just fine. Talking in front of kids is different than talking in front of adults. Once you do it a few times you will get used to it. Maybe you could try observing a class, or substituting to help you get over this.

Let me say this, I am always upset about talking in front of my peers. If I have to give a presentation, my face turns red, I sweat to death, I shake and stammer, and then my heart stops. Sounds like exaggerations, but it's not (well, except the heart).

But I love teaching in front of the classroom. I still get nervous the first day with the kids, but your speech class IS NOT an indicator on how well you will teach. What does matter is how well you know your subject, how patient you are in letting the munchkins figure things out on their own rather than you telling them all the time, and you being able to hold your composure if a lesson doesn't go as planned...can you improvise on the spot?

First, you need to learn be able to talk in front of a group of people. The thing that helps me the most and learned from a speech class was that "you must earn the right to speak to a group of people". This means that once you know the topic very well talking about it or making a speech about it becomes natural because you know the subject and feel comfortable with it. You must first earn the right to make a speech; the rest comes natural with experience.

Some public speaking is required but the first day is the most nervous day. The best teachers plan lessons where student do the work and thus the learning so you really don't need to do a lot of up front talking.l

teaching is the same as any public speaking. Yes, many many people have fears and nervousness about public speaking. Yes many people DO get over these fears with time. It is like anything the more you do it, the better you become. I like to pretend that It is just another day and I am at home "praticing". Actually I think with teaching it would even be easier as they are children and they don't expect you to be scared or nervous. Pretend as if you do this everyday. If you feel confident you will exude confidence and you'll get through it in no time. JUST DONT THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! Hope this helps!

You might have the same fears at first, but you'll get over them quickly. Plus, it's different when they're kids. The younger they are, the easier it is to talk to them. The worst part about talking to them is the initial meeting. I was a substitute teacher, and that's what I had to do every day. I had to meet 20-30 new names and faces every day. I don't even say hi to people in public I'm so shy. So if I can do it, so can you!

Just practice the first few sentences u are going to say to ur students. You are only thinking about yourself standing in front of a set of students. The other side is also the same. The students will be thinking how they are going to impress their new teacher.
They know nothing of u and are equally eager to know about u as you are about them. The feeling of uneasiness in the pit of your stomach is something every teacher suffers during the first few moments of his/her career. Its is natural. The feeling u have when u see ur doctor sucking in medicine into the syringe to be injected into your body. This is true for every patient.
So don't worry about your past feelings in front your Friends in the speech classes. Meet your students cheerfully, those tender minds will make u more joy full and energetic.

If you can't get over the fear, look for another career. You have to be in front of class 99% of the time !
I have over 100 students in Gym class at a time, you have to take control of the class.Next year we expect the average of 150 !
Students can pick up on your fear really fast !

Of course you're scared, but in school you will learn how to speak in front of a classroom.
