Thank goodness! It is nice to see that saner, more tolerant minds have prevailed! It is also reassuring that the religious right's strangle hold on America seems to be weakening - what do you think?

I am not gay - I am married with 2 children. Do people honestly think that only gays were opposed to this?

I do think it is great that this ammendment failed. It is unconstitutional on many levels. It is also socially unjust. The idea of protecting ones personal definition of marriage at the cost of Americans rights as tax payers, rights to
be at a loved one's bedside, rights to health care and rights to maintain personal dignity is unconstitutional and immoral.

The 13 colonies were wildly different in politcal and religious thought but unified under one banner (13 stars) against tyranny to protect their right
to self rule and each colonies right to self legislate. The constitution is the common ground for that unity while established to still protect the individuality
of the 13 states AND the individuals.

Strange how the Republicans only become concerned about these issues
immediately before an election. What respect for the voters that the think the
voters are such cattle that they can't see through them. Such inhumanity to
those they willingly trod on to gain personal power. Is that an American spirit?

That amendment is wrong on so many levels. I can't believe it could even be considered. First of all, most of the people who are for it is because of religious reasons. The constitution is supposed to protect freedom of religion, not enforce religious views. Their response to that is 'we need to protect the institution of marriage'. Protect it from what? Most states have there own laws on the subject and that's where it should stay.

there are very few countries in the civilised world where such a legislative amendment could even have been suggested.

the us still has a great deal in common with middle eastern theocracies - even while it targets them as axes of evil.

Congratulations

Our law-book need not be ammended
Though some folk out there are offended
By those that take vows
Amidst all the rows.
Their bravery should be commended.
