What is an outrigger used for.?

I am interested in getting into fishing and possibly buying a boat. I've been looking at various offshore boats that are equipped with outriggers... what are these outriggers used for? Thanks for your answers.

It holds the fishing line away, and out to the side of the boat with a clip, while trolling, fish strikes, clip lets go, fish ON !
