With the day after the US Senate rejecting the ban on gay marriages, I want to hear from the American people directly.

Do you support or oppose gay marriages?

I do not have any problem at all with gay marriage. If two people love each other, and want to commit themselves to each other for the rest of their lives legally, then I think it is okay. Love is hard enough to find in this world. Why should people who find love with the same sex be punished and not have the same rights as the rest of us.
By the way, in response to one of the answers, I do believe i am a human being even though I support people's right to get married, even if of the same sexual orientation.

Marriage is a contract in two ways
1) A spiritual/religious contract
2) A government/legal contract

If we talk about marriage as in #1, the government has absolutely no right to tell any religious institution/community who they can or cannot marry.

If we talk about marriage as in #2, the government has absolutely no right to say what group of people or individuals are allowed to get married. Should we be OK with saying Blacks cannot marry Whites, Jews cannot marry Muslims, Americans cannot marry Brits?

Religious arguments create a bigger problem than the "perceived" problem of homosexuality. If a religious argument is valid then I think divorce would be illegal, the poor should be able to go onto the farmers field and pick up any leftovers, charging interest on loans should be illegal, the FDA should make sure all food is prepared Kosher. Pork products should be outlawed. People should be able to eat marijuana since in Genesis God said, "I give every green plant for food."
Families are institutions marriage is a contract. Happy stable families regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or sexuality promote better societies. So, yes I support happy marriages!

Marriages should be happy. Why would anybody oppose that?

Or are you talking about homosexual marriages? I hate that stupid euphemism for homosexual. Then, no, I see no reason to support homosexual marriage. There is no compelling benefit to society that I can discern.

And the potential long term ramifications of screwing around with a millenia-old natural human tradition should not be pooh-poohed so cavalierly.

But this whole amendment thing isn't really about homosexual marriages. It's about rogue courts who impose their own versions of social policies upon the public - a de facto judicial tyranny. If the courts weren't full of little despots, this would never have become an issue.

I support the rights of gays and lesbians to get married. To me it seems foolish to ban same-sex marriages. The general outcry against it is that it defiles the sanctity of marriage. I want to know what about it exactly is so horrible.

Most of the people who make the arguments against it have their arguments deeply rooted in faith. The bible says that homosexuality is wrong and that God will not allow it. Someone on this thread went so far as to declare gays/lesbians as "not Human". Here's a little irony for you, does not God say to respect thy fellow man? If you are taking away his rights and treating him poorly what does that say about you as a Christian?

Not to mention that by trying to ban same-sex marriages on religious grounds, you are violating the establishment clause of the 1st amendment which states that the government cannot take preference of a religion. By taking the side of it being against the bible, you are violating our constitution.

During the Senate debates it was said by many that Gays/Lesbians can not adequately raise a family as a man/woman marriage could. However, it is proven that divorce leads to serious problems in a child's development. Considering that approximately 50% of all marriages end in divorce, I believe that a stable gay marriage is far better than a divorced straight marriage and as good as a stable one.

What is actually quite disturbing is that we aren't trying to regulate individual actions, we are trying to regulate the human condition.

Gay marriage is a civil rights issue!! smilier to black people in the 40s and 50s. I think pursue of happiness is the reason they should not ban it. People will look back at us and be ashamed just like I look back at how the black were treated in the past. You would think these neo cons would ban divorce because I can`t think of a better way to screw up a kid. And I love it when people made statements about God and gays like they had a meeting with him.

I support gay marriages,I have had a partner for 5 years now, we are raising 4 kids at home one in Iraq. Have 2 grand kids and we love them all so much. Our family is happy, loving like any other family. To us family is most important, and we teach the kids to love all, there is no room for hate.

"43% of first marriages end within 15 years.
Red states have a divorce rate 27% higher than blue states.
75% of all divorced people re-marry, half of them within three years."

With that statistic, why would anyone support any marriage, it is becoming a joke.

I really do not care if there are same sex marriages. Gays pay taxes, abide by the law, and contribute to the economy. It appears that ONLY those individuals who are insecure in their own sexuality object to gays, bash gays, and oppress them. They do not affect me in any negative manner, so why should I object to their having equal rights?
