Get an Oyster card if you're over here for a while - you'll save a lot of money and they allow you to pre-pay credit. Buying weekly travelcards also works out cheaper if you travel a lot and work on any mode of transport.

A lot of people under-estimate buses and walking! You can walk between almost every where in zone 1 without too much trouble. I tend to use the overland train services to Charing Cross/London Bridge/Victoria then just walk from there.
