For the first poster, obviously you did not understand the question. I am not preaching from the sidelines, I was just asking a question about a quote that was said to me and wanted other opinions.

To an extent. When death is imminent or appears imminent, even the staunchiest athiest among us may for a second wonder about his fate and what will become of him or her. That's where the God aspect comes in. I would think it would be kinda hard to, say, lie alone dying somewhere and not ponder anything in those last moments except your fading breathing and slowing heartbeat. I mean, if you don't believe in a higher power, what do you do when you lie there dying if there is no one around? Lie there and think, "gee, I wonder if I left the oven on?" Of course, I haven't been in that position so I nor anyone else typing here would know.

Yep. Once had an oldster teacher who served in WWII & had the unfortunate experience of being in a foxhole somewhere in Italy. Did the atheist find God in the foxhole, even for a minute? You bet he did...and when he got home he became a priest.

No. I know for a fact it isn't. I have an atheist family member who was in WW2 and he was most certainly in a foxhole. Most people use this to mean that those who dive in foxholes are praying to god not to get killed. One can still hope to not get killed and yet not believe in god. To say otherwise shows you don't look at the whole picture, imo.

I lived during WW2 and I would believe this. Having said that my father was an atheist and never wavered even in very dangerous situations.

In times of stress, God's name is usually called. I can believe this particular quote.

NO. Foxes are not particularly religious animals. They are busy being foxy. Perhaps you should try it out instead of side-line preaching.

No. There are plenty of atheists in the armed forces. And they didn't suddenly find faith while under fire.
