Mom and Dad: the kids to not do the shopping for your family, do they??? Why will you not give them healthy foods to eat?? You're caving into their wants, not their needs.

You teach your children by example: In other words, "NO MORE FAST JUNK FOOD". Bring in healthy foods into the household and that's it. They might throw a tantrum for a while, but they'll get hungry enough and soon will be eating right. At this point, you are killing your children slowly.

A parent does not "lose control" over kids; they give it up cause it's alot easier than fighting with them about everything. You're going to have to bite the bullet and do what is best for them; and that means, don't give in to what they want no matter what. Get them involved in meal preperation. Get educated on healthy meals and different recipes to try.

Check out this web site and maybe you can watch the show also. It's full of good information for families like yours. "Honey, we're killing the Kids!"

These kids only eat what you provide for them.

Involve them in the preparation of meals. When the kids get involved they are more likely to eat. Go to the farmers market and choose fresh fruits and veggies together. Learn to steam or saute them lightly. Simple preparation methods are best. Let the kids learn to appreciate the flavor of each fresh food on its own.

Pack lunches for them. Let their friends parents know that you are choosing a new path for your children and that you would appreciate their help in enforcing your new plan by not offering "junque" foods, but if they do want to offer anything maybe it could be fresh fruits or veggie snacks. If this is a problem, perhaps you could send a snack with your kids when they go visit, or you could have all the kids play at your home much more often, where you will offer the healthy snacks that you approve of.

A little hunger does wonders for an appetite. Cut out all the junk food in the household. Prepare cut fruits and veggies in advance, keep them in the fridge ready for a quick snack when you decide it is time for one.

If the kids are overweight, it is due to the parents choices in the environment the parents have created.

Kids learn what they live. If they see you eating junk and sitting down all the time that is what they will learn is acceptable. Try changing the family's eating patterns together. Do not bring junk into the house and stay away from fast food restaurants. And when they scream and yell remember you taught them thaat junk was OK in the first place. Another idea is to find some healthy kid friendly recipies that they can help make. Kids usually like to eat what they help make. Also try cutting back slowly, substituting fat free or sugar free pudding for the reg. stuff, without telling them and there might be less resistance!

There are a couple of options. You can try to make healthy food as delicious as junk food with interesting recipes or else just a little extra searching for really delicious healthy food; kids especially seem to like exotic fruits, even things like starfruit (particularly if it's something they get to choose). Keeping healthy food more easily accessible than junk food to kids is also important.

If they are really adamantly against anything they see as "healthy food", you could look for versions of so-called junk food that are designed to be more healthy, with fewer calories and more nutrients. You could also just limit their servings of junk food per day, and let them choose which servings they want -- snacks or certain meals, for example, and then maybe within a snack, decrease the size (instead of six Oreos, three?).

Finally, you can try to put an emphasis on exercise, through sports (for your nine year-old, maybe team sports with friends from school) or just active play; at that age, doing active things as a family would be great both for bonding and for fun. Good luck!

Just don't bring it home...your kids may defy you and refuse to eat...and that's okay. Let em' starve it out...they can go days with out food, just make sure they are hydrated, but believe me they will give in very soon a day at the most as long as you don't cave and let them have the junk...they won't starve or suffer any damage...you are doing them a favor! My daughter had the same problem and our nutritionist suggested we do it and it worked...she held out almost two whole days, but she gave in and devoured a salad and a fruit smoothie....all fruit and some fiber supplement...no extra sugar or anything added. You can allow treats later, after they have come to enjoy healthier foods. Now we own her food wise at least...getting her to bed is another story.

THey will eat what is available. If you buy healthy food they will eventually eat it. They may not at first but give them a few days. They will when they get hungry. It is a lifestyle change, the entire family has to do it. If the parents continue to eat unhealthy food you cannot expect your children not to follow.

dont buy them junk food. when they get hungry enought they will eat the healthy stuff. you could also give them a small treat as a reward for eating the healthy stuff. for example if they eat healthy all week take them out for ice cream one night. but dont let them get the biggest ice cream!
