They need to know the guy that sells fake ID's, because if you can supply your dorm with beer, everybody will be your friend.

Staying in a dorm can be a living hell...noise, bad roommates, etc. so maybe off campus housing might be best. Choose roommates very carefully. Get everything in writing, don't be responsible for anyone. Make sure there is a written agreement between you about people staying over, drugs, parties, etc.
Don't get a credit card and act like its free money, it isn't and you can damage your credit rating very quickly and get into debt.
Study, that's why you are going to college, and do the best you can to be the best you can in your field. If you are in a class that is really difficult, get help from the beginning, don't wait.
Don't do stupid things others are doing, it could cost you dearly.
Enjoy your time at college, it happens once and goes by fast.

1. Drinking becomes a regular activity (if it wasn't already for the student in question), or at least the topic of most casual conversations.
2. You may not become best friends, or even like, your roommate if you live in dorms.
3. Get to know people, no matter how reserved you usually are. Everyone else is in the same situation and most people like meeting potential new friends.
4. It can sometimes get lonely, even with friends at college. Try to have at least one person from home that you can call when things get tough academically or in their personal life.
6. Get a job!
5. Life's a party...(I'll let you fill in the rest)

If there is a bed bath and beyond anywhere near you, go there and they have a check list for college students of everything you'll need to move out...it's really easy and convenient...and i just moved out for the first time you just need to learn how to budget money because it goes fast...all the little things add up and before you know it you're broke! Good Luck!

a clear idea of how to do laundry. how to keep track and to pay bills. know that THEY must buy food to eat. know that just because you are at school, does not mean that you can stay up and party all night,or cut classes. know that you will meet people like that, and you don't want to be them. know that your parents are worrying about you, and to call them every few days till they know your not a idiot. (this might take a semester) then do it once a week. have a clear idea of how to fit a social life in with school so you don't burn out. know to be open to new ideas and be accepting of cultures and lifestyles you have not been around. do not assume this will be fun, this is hard work. do not lower your standards just because these new people don't know you.

Self-control - ie how to know when you've had enough to drink!
Bit of cash wouldn't go amiss...
If they're moving in with other people, the art of diplomacy, tolerance and forgiveness will be big ones!
