The country is relatively unknown. Which is not really a bad thing. There's not much going on there politically. It does not experience coup attempts or major terrorist activities. It does not have a reputation for being too competitive. It does not have earthquakes or volcanoes. There's not much about Malaysia that makes the news (news usually about disasters right?). So usually pretty much under the radar...kinda like the world's best kept secret. Those who know the country, other than the ones living there, know it to be beautiful and a fun place to be.
Not all people are prosperous, this is true. But neither are Americans or Canadians etc. There are the poor and the rich and the middle class. The country on the whole is growing economically and more people are starting to realize that.

Ignorance exists everywhere. If you were to ask Malaysians what do they think of Arizona or St Petersburg, the majority won't know much either. So it's not surprising that foreigners think of Malaysia as poor - stereotype images of south east asian countries may also contribute to this negative perspectives.
Personally i feel that Malaysia has NEVER been able to sell itself to the world effectively, never consistent with its advertising & marketing campaigns. The "Truly Asia" theme is conceited, and of little meaning. Who cares about Malaysia's multi racial people living in harmony? Malaysians do, not the tourists - they just want the beach, the hill resorts, the scenic, whatever...
Factfile: Poverty in Malaysia is on the decline. In 2002, it was 5.1%, down from 7.5% in 1999. The number of poor households declined by 25.6% to 267,900. If the number of handicapped, the disabled and the elderly who received welfare support from the Government are excluded, the incidence of poverty in 2002 was estimated at 4.5%. In the Government's 8th Malaysia Plan, the aim is to reduce poverty to 0.5% by 2005.

Let me tell you the fact about Malaysia in a global view.
Malaysia is a very small country yet a very developing one. If you ask yourself why people think Malaysia is poor, you have to know where they got the news about Malaysia from. In the worse case scenario, the think Malaysians are still living on a tree!!!
But if you meet them and tell them what is PETRONAS, what is PETRONAS twin towers, what is KUALA LUMPUR, they will definitely know that. Why? Because the Malaysian government always focus on KUALA LUMPUR. That is why Malaysia is known as a poor country in Asia.
But to be honest, Malaysia if you were to compare it with America, Australia and other big countries like Japan, of course we are still behind them. Because of what? Because our minerals were taken by many foreign countries before Malaysia herself was born.
And believe or not, Malaysia is still young compared to Japan and America. In in Asia context, Malaysia is still very young and small. However, if you think Malaysia is poor, try to come here to the heart of Malaysia, KUALA LUMPUR.
And if you were to be here during festive seasons, many foreigners will be here to celebrate. If you think Malaysia is still poor, why we have PETRONAS? how come we can build PETRONAS twin towers in which many foreign citizens are there up until now visiting that tallest twin tower in the world and say : "Oh gosh! What a magnificent building i've ever seen!!!"
So dont judge a book by its cover. I have seen many americans. They are very rude and dont respect elder people. Oh come on. We are human beings.
If our country is so poor and considered as ignorant, why americans invite our former prime minister to discuss globalization problems in United Nations? Think about it.

I have an ex American boss, and it was his first time coming to Asia three years ago. He loved it here, and didn't want to leave when he got another posting in Thailand. He seems to like it here a lot, more than I do! hehe.....well, first of all, ppl here speak English a lot, lots of variety of food, a good middle income group, weather is nice(according to him, but too hot for me!) ,etc
It's not a poor country, but not as rich as Singapore though. And the ppl have to improve on being courteous, cultured, and be more hygienic!
Well, my current boss, also an American, loves it here now!
