I do not think anyone here will know unless they are top brass from NASA or the Chinese aerospace projects.

The first successful fly-by mission to Mars was NASA's Mariner 4 launched in 1964. The first successful objects to land on the surface were two Soviet probes from the Mars probe program, launched in 1971, but both lost contact within seconds of landing. Then came the 1975 NASA launches of the Viking program, which consisted of two orbiters, each having a lander. Both landers successfully touched down in 1976 and remained operational for many years.

Followed by several others, the most recent one being:

On August 12, 2005 the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe was launched toward the planet, to conduct a two-year science survey. The purpose of the mission is to do more studies and prepare the upcoming lander missions. It arrived in orbit on March 10, 2006. The next scheduled mission to Mars is the NASA Phoenix Mars lander, expected to launch in 2007.

Seems that no person will land on Mars until there is another space race between the Americans and Russians in the 1960s. This time if China is going to send a man to Mars, I am sure the an American will be there first.

If I had to pick a person's name, I will choose Erik Lindbergh, a rather famous aviator who promotes space tourism

Either Bugs Bunny or Duck Dodgers have already been there, chasing after Marvin the Martian.

Then, of course, there's the Edgar Rice Burroughs stories of John Carter on Mars.

And, of course, there were lots of residents of Mars in "Babylon V".

It has already been done in the late 1950's by some airforce base in Arizona I think Marine Navy reserves but I forgot there names but there has been plenty of other human landings on Mars.

Won't happen in our lifetime. But it occurs to me that the first creature will not be a man or woman, but an ape or some type of animal.

To make your list shorter I want you to know I will not be the one that first walks on the moon. Keep looking.
