Ska started back in the late 50's, although it wasn't recognized as ska until about 1962, and was further popularized by the forming of the Skatalites, the premier backing group for Jamaican singers, in 1964. By the late 60's, ska had slowed down to almost half temp and this was called Rocksteady. The reggae sound emerged in 1968 and was actually quite fast, compared to the sound that most people associate with reggae today. Modern reggae was popularized in the mid 70's by artists such as Bob Marley, who played in a style known as Roots reggae. This style focused on the Rastafarian lifestyle.

ska is older and faster, reggae slowed down the beat. both are jamaican, but ska came first
