Well I was a vegetarian for 11 years until a few weeks ago and I can understand where they are coming from .I love the taste of meat and I really hate that but I do still try to eat meat alternatives when I can. Now I do specify like organic meat (free range chicken and grain fed cows) and I use eggbeaters for eggs but it is a moral dilema Im faced with.

Wow so many ignorant people.
First of all, you don't need meat to survive. In fact the structure of your digestive system is better suited for vegetables, not meat. Plus there are mountains of research supporting the fact that vegetarianism is healthier and better for the environment.
Second I resent that vegetarians are being generalized as extremists. I personally do not push my beliefs on anyone else. If they ask, I answer. Sure there are militants out there, but that is true of any belief/lifestyle/religion/whatever.
Here my answer to the question. I don't see why a cow has any less right to live than a dog. The argument that a cow is less cute or not as smart doesn't hold water because it is simply applying our judgment and no one gave us the right to judge. That is arrogant. The planet does not belong to us. It's the other way around. That is an antiquated idea (by the way the world isn't flat either).
Do the research and educate yourself. Then make an intelligent choice about what you eat, whether it is meat or not.

You can love animals all you want, but there is a natural order in life, and we are at the top of the food chain because we get our nourishment from lots of sources, like cows, pigs, and chickens, as well as veggies, etc. It's what our bodies are made to eat, naturally. A vegetarian or vegan, in order to maintain good health, has to make sure he is getting the nutrients he would get from meat from other sources, like vitamins. I would never eat my pets, though. "Animals" cover a broad range of species, and they all serve different purposes. Maybe some people don't think we should eat cows, but what else are we going to use them for, if not milk and meat? They are not naturally equipped with strong defense for surviving in the wild, and would probably not survive very long. If we aren't eating them, another predator will. It's a natural cycle.

I eat meat .. love animals ... unlike some of the "animal rights" extremists I have not forgotten that I am but an animal too. I smile into the mirror and see those pointy little teeth on the sides of the knife-like ones in the middle and it is obvious that I evolved as a meat eater. People who claim to not eat meat for "spiritual" reasons deny their own humanity and, pretty much, spit in the face of our true nature.

I love animals and I eat meat.
But, I am very picky about where my meat comes from. I only buy "home grown" meat. Meaning I buy from a small time local farmer. I will not support factory farmers...they way the animals are kept and all the drugs and steroids they pump into these animals to make them gorw bigger faster is not something I want to support...or eat.
Our supermarket sells meat from local farmers, and also buys meat from the 4-H'ers. So when I shop, I make sure I get local meats. The animals are kept in much better conditions, they are allowed to graze freely and not pumped full of drugs.
I also do not wear furs since the sole purpose of killing the animal is for its skin..the rest gets tossed
. Leather...I have mixed feelings about. I am a firm believer in "If you kill it, you better use the whole animal for something" Most cows are used for meat, the bones, ears, hooves etc are used for dog bones, and the hide is used for leather. But, if you buy leather anything from a store, more than likely it is from a cow who was raised on a factory farm...I won't support that.

I have a hard time agreeing with that philosophy. If you don't like meat, don't eat it, but don't blame it on your love for animals. Some of those animals would eat you if they got a chance. If you like meat, you're not evil. I love animals, thats why I eat them. The vegetarian extremists are just another group that have a victim mentality and try to push their ideologies on everyone else.

We are a part of the food chain. We evolved as omnivores, meant to eat all kinds of things. It's the cruel way most of our meat animals are raised that bothers me. I try to shop free range and organic meat. If the animal lived as nature intended it to, it is healthier to us anyway. I still love animals, and my cats eat meat too.

Rufus- u r the man. My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't ever hurt an animal but I have lived my life eating meat and don't intend to stop. If you don't think about what you are eating or how it got on your plate then why worry?
