Change your diet. Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid. Eliminate alcohol (especially beer), rich foods, red meat.

When you first feel the symptoms (the joints in my toes begin to pop) take two to three Advil (Tylenol doesn't work), Naproxin also works but don't take as many tablets, and drink a lot of water, sometimes this keeps it from becoming so severe.
Don't eat pork it will increase uric acid levels. Limit red meat. Though not medically proven, I have found that eating a can of dark red cherries every day or two helps. I think blue berries work in the same way.
Most important though, exercise every day and drink enough water to keep your urine clear.

When your Uric Acid levels have returned to near normal your GP should prescribe Allapurinol. Until then it is rumoured that eating plenty of red cherries helps (it does me a bit) and stay away from foods high in purines (chicken for example).
