I tried to do it natural...It took me forever to get dilated to 4cm. I was in agony and trying to tough it out. I finally got an epidural (which contrary to popular belief, DOES NOT take away all the pain) It just took the edge off the pain and I could relax enough to let nature take it's course. I dilated from 4-10cm in 1 hour. I could feel each contraction still, and when it came time to push I could still feel. If you wanted to do IV meds, they won't give more than the recommended dose of what could affect baby. I would recommend an epidural, but do what's right for you and not what others recommend. No one gets a medal for trying to be tough and no one really cares how tough you tried to be when it's all over.

Hey I had a natural birth. The best piece of advise that I got was from my brothers X. She was the only one that told me that the only pain there was, was during a contraction! I tried to have the gas but I couldn't get it to work and when I asked the nurse what I was doing wrong she said it was almost over and not to worry about it (like hell is what I thought and threw the mask) but in all honesty Nat was right the only pain the was were the contractions and a lil with the last pushes but as soon as you hold your baby you forget about it all. The one thing I wasn't told which would have helped was that when bubba slides out it feels like someone has winded you really bad so don't forget to breath! Good Luck Chick...

I wanted to give birth without medication with my 1st child, but of course that was until I was about 4 centimeters dilated. I had morphine and an epidural both times I was in labor. Trust me child birth is not what you expect, it is the most excruciating pain you can experience!
Medication is not harmful to you or your child, unless you have too much, but the doctors and nurses know what they are doing and they will not allow you to have more than what is needed.
But when your child comes you want to be able to enjoy him without being exhausted, so if you feel like you need some medication during labor, DO NOT be afraid, there are no side affects, except for no pain!
Good luck sweetie:-)

Planning is good but its always best to be fexible anything can happen. With my first I had an epidural but planned on it since I was being induced. My second was 100 percent natural and I wanted an epidural but there was no time. This is my last baby and I plan on trying to go natural if possible but will accept an epidural if the labor goes for a long time.

i was in labor for 15 hours and wanted an epidural, but it took them 10 hours to get one in me because i was having a problem getting it. i had to have the needle stuck in my spine 4 times but i think it was worth it, the epidural didn't kick in until right before i pushed and the labor pains hurt so bad, i think that pain reliver is a good idea. i don't think that there are any side affects from having a medicated birth. after a couple hours the numbest went away and i felt sore, but fine. anyone who says that the medicine will effect the baby is wrong, i have a 6 week old baby and she is absolutely perfect!!!!
Good luck with whatever you choose!!

I had my first daughter 15 years ago natural (24 hours labor)and let me tell you that for me it was the most painful thing I have ever went through I caved ask for epidural it was too late so i didnt get one. I was so tired after she was born I couldnt spend time with her until I recovered my second child 12 years ago(11hours labor) i had the epidural as soon as i could. i was up playing cards laughing and waiting until time came to push they pushed back the meds and i felt the need to push him out. I held and nursed him right away. My two recent babies 2 1/2yrs & 3 months i had c sections so of course meds were involved but i would take a semi medicated vag birth anytime not so doped up your lost but just enough to deal and enjoy giving life without feeling like your losing yours

I tried having a natural birth, but honey the pain is so unbearable that if you can do it more power to you. But seriously I tried it naturally and ended up getting just pain meds and that put me to sleep and then I was out and the contractions started hitting me really hard and dealing with that and trying to wake up from the meds was hard too. I ended up getting an epideral at about 5 AM and had my son at 5:12 AM....so I had just got it and then he was born but it did help with the after birth pains....Good Luck with your decision!!

both and i like the natural birth and the only reason that i had any meds. is b/c my labor was induced....the natural i loved b/c i wanted to experience everything and after the baby is delivered the pain goes away anyway if the pain gets to overwhelming then ask for something mild just to take the edge off the contractions...good luck!!!!!

Both of mine were induce. I had pain medications and epedural. They but it low in the end so i could feel to push. The second one (and last), wore off almost completely,so I felt it, and I mean felt it. It hurt like hell!!!! He was a boy, so he was big. It just depends on the woman, if you can't handle the pain, there's nothing wron with gettting one, now days, it don't hurt the baby.My babies came out eyes open and alert, they weren't drug up at all. Good luck!!!!

take the drugs. believe me. take the drugs. the epidural works wonders. don't listen to those "natural birth" nut heads. This is the modern age and there are drugs to help women. take the drugs. I did and I have no regrets.
Have a c-section if needed. I needed too. My baby's head was perfectly round and beautiful unlike those vaginal birth babies whose head is all alien like.
