Was fuel stabilizer used? If you use fuel stabilizer, no need to drain it and run it dry...... running it dry is the worst thing you can do.
What color is the smoke? blue? how did you determine it needed oil? Was it smoking before you put oil in it? Take the dipstick out, wipe it off and put it back in and take it out...... is it right at the full mark? or way Over....? sounds like, if it happened after you put the oil in, you either over filled it or put gas in the oil.
If you used oil/gas mix from a 2 cycle engine to fuel it..... well thats why it smokes.
Want a guide?
change the oil every 25 hourse of operation, use a HD-30 weight of any good name brand above 40 degrees F. use a multi weight below 40. OR use a synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30 all year round.
Check the oil regularly.... every time is when I do mine.
Replace the spark plug when it gets hard to start..... but clean it and gap it at the end of every season (.30). Use fresh gas..... and use a fuel stabilizer if keeping the gas over a month. Store the mower in a dry place..... if you put it under a tarp.....make sure it can vent... condensation will build up under them. When storing the engine, with a good fuel stabilizer in the gas, replace the oil and fill the fuel tank full and put a peice of tinfoil over the gas cap and rubber band it down.
Replace the air filter once a year if its paper....more in more dusty conditions. If its a foam filter....clean it either with gas or soap and water, and oil it (engine oil, wring it out good after). If you use soap and water.....make sure to ring it out and let it dry a day or so.
The foam prefilter for paper air filters should not be oiled!!
Check the blade/s for wear and tear and sharpen them when need be. A dull blade makes for a bad cut and more strain on the engine. Make sure its balanced (nail in a post, hang it by the bolt hole and make sure it comes out level) and of course....mark things in your yard you can't move, so not to hit them and damage the engine.
If your not up to it, about every 100 hours, have someone to remove the engines head (what the spark plug goes into) and clean the combustion chamber out of all the carbon.

Not sure I understand. Did it quit since you took it in last year?
This may sound dumb, but did you add gas and oil mix (2 cycle gas) to the tank? I hope not.
I tune mine every season (oil change, oil filter, air filter, spark plug. Also, I drain all gas out of it when you put it away for the winter.

Just prime the engine if it has a button. Press the button once or twice. If it doesn't start let it sit for a few minutes, then try again without priming it. If it's a good engine it will start.

some, some, are cereal killers. some youthful "toughs" imagine, "Your *ss is grass, and that i'm the backyard mower." some are deeply chlora philosophic. they imagine they are bringing contained in the sheaves. the awful reaper is a backyard mower, after a way. He is accepted with there are a range of issues worse than lack of existence. If that's authentic, he thinks he heaves a scythe of alleviation. i comprehend what you're questioning. "supply me mower, MOWER."
