I want to go back to school. I graduated highschool in 2005 and I was just going to go to county school. I havent talked to my parents in 2 years and I was trying to get financial aid because I cant afford school plus rent and utilities. If there anyway I can get financial aid? It doesnt seem fair that people who live with their parents get plenty of money and there are people who need the money. My grades in highschool were ok. a's and b's with the occasional c. Does anyone have anything that can help me out? This is so stressful.

Unfortunately, until you are 23 or an independent student, you are required to provide your parents' financial information on your financial aid forms.

Also, you may feel independent, and are taking care of yourself, but the government doesn't consider you independent unless you meet certain guidelines:
1. Member of the military
2. Married
3. 23 years of age

I'd suggest working and saving money until you turn 23, and perhaps going to a small community college. The tuition costs will be lower, you could take one or two classes per semester, and you could continue to work. The only other option is to apply for and win lots of scholarships to cover the costs of your college education. (www.fastweb.com)

Good Luck. I was in that situation myself.

I have a feeling that if you are under 25 and/or your parents claim you on their taxes, then you may have trouble getting a lot of financial aid. Check and see if your parents still claim you. Then fill out the FAFSA. You will need either your tax returns or your parents tax returns to do this. When you have completed it, the last page of the application will give you an EFC (Expected Family Contribution). This amount will be how much you will have to contribute before you receive any financial aid for the year.

Other than that I can only suggest loans that you will have to repay once you have finished school.

Also, check and see if the school you are applying to has any non-need based scholarships or grants. Another thing you might want to consider is work-study.

It is also worth considering starting at a community college since it is usually cheaper.

Call the school of your choice and schedule a meeting with the financial person. Explain your situation and they will give you the info. Some schools have a program called work study. You could check into a community college and take two years there before moving to the university in which you want to graduate. Sign into Fastweb online. This will also help you to find money. Good luck.

One thing you may consider is becoming an independent student. If you have had no contact with your parents for two years I expect this is possible. You have to prove somehow that you are not actually their financial dependent, but if you can do that and show that you have had no contact, then you will be designated as an independent and your aid will be determined based on your income (assuming you are not married). Getting married will also resolve the issue of being independent of your parents, but will now include your spouse's income in the aid calculations!

Mama is absolutely right, I go to college and I'm on financial aid (school loans). It's ALOT easier to get loans once you turn 23. Plus you usually get more since you don't have to include your parents financial info. Also, if you don't work and prove that you live on your own, the amount of the loans increase and you will most definitely get pell grants too. (you don't have to pay those back)

I would suggest to get a job(just any job) and save the money go from there and get back in school because education is everything in life, and to achieve you need to believe and succeed throughout your lifetime. Good luck.

It seams like you are ok at school subjects, then you can make money by teaching the things you study that is what I do...
it is fun and you get to understand the things you study a lot better when you have to teach others then when you just study

Tutor others
