Do you want me to write your essay for school for you? Quite simply psychotherapy does not involve medicating a patient and thus can be performed by a person who is not a medical doctor.
Although psychiatrists who are also medical doctors can both prescribe medicine and use psychotherapy, psychologists who are not allowed to prescribe medicine and who are not doctors can also do psychotherapy.
Thus the therapy has nothing to do with medicine at all save for the fact that it often accompanies medical treatment as a part of a two pronged approach.
You should really read about this and answer the question yourself. As far as examples and refernces go, I am sure you can open up those dusty books for a few examples and references.

Psychotherapy: An emotionally charged, confiding interaction between a trained therapist and someone who suffers from psychological difficulties.
From what I gather medicine is not invovled.

Psychotherapy refers to the healing of the soul. (psyche: soul, therapy: healing)
Psychology refers to the study of the soul. (logos: bondage, relationship)
A medical (doctor) is a person that mediates between a person and his malady, in order to find a cure.
Finally, the term medical treatment refers to any action taken to heal a disease, and not necessarily means taking medication drugs.

Psychotherapist are not licensed to practice medicine and therefore none is used in their treatment protocol. Psychiatrists are licensed physicians and treat with medications.

therapists are not dr.s. they are not so keyed into the body and brain chemistry as much as psychiatrists are. they are more into learned behaviors and/or the indiviual's response to or reaction to the world around him or her. they help to look at youself in ways you may not have thought and the are much more like counselors or coaches to help you stop messin' up or help you stop whatever suffering you may be in. they have way less formal schooling....and they cant perscribe meds.
