The school my kids go to has a pretty clear definition of what amount of homework to expect a night for each grade.
1st - 10 minutes
2nd - 20 minutes
3rd - 30 minutes
4th - 40 minutes
5th - 50 minutes
6th - 60 minutes
Also, they do not have weekend homework. Sometimes there are assignments due in a few days, so those can get thrown in there too.

My daughter is 5 and she is in or was in kindergarten...(she's off for the summer now.) But anyway when she received homework it was about three pages stapled together on a Monday and did not have to be returned until Friday. Really it didn't take very long at all. It's hard to say how long, it depended on what type of homework it was, believe it or not kindergarteners don't just have to color there homework these days.

hmm.. i got no kids... but since i did do homework when I was a kid, I can tell you what I did.
My folks were pretty strict when it came to homework and they had a simple rule of thumb for me..
I need to study as many hours as the grade I am in.
I know that sucks and by the time, I did my 10th and beyond, it got quite tiresome, but since it paid out for me.. I am not complaining anymore..

Sixth graders at my school get about 1/2 an hour a subject. (there are usually about five subjects a night but it's a private school) Public might be different.
Thank god school is out for the summer. <_>
