Which fields of Master's are needed to be a foreign language teacher?

It depends on where you want to work as a foreign language teacher. If it is in the public schools, a MA is not as important as passing the appropriate tests and becoming ESL certified. If it is in private schools or the community college level, a MA is quite important as well as demonstrated knowledge of the language. A MA in the language itself or even something like Spanish Education would be quite powerful on a resume. It is always good to have experience living in a country where the language is spoke too.

If you planning on teaching English as a Foreign language then you will need to pass certain state certification programs. However, the MA in English with an a special emphasis in ESL or Composition or the like is required (at minimum for Higher Educ. i.e. University level or Community College/ Community workshops). Now if you teacher another language at those levels you will need a Masters in that field or language at min. again.

If you want to teach in a high school then look at your states dept. of educ. site to see what exams and licensing courses you need to go through. Ordinarily no Masters is required, but can result in a higher pay rate.

here more weightage is given to your knowledge of foreign language. that is more important than a Master's degree.
