I have my own opinions on this, but I really want to hear what people think on this. When the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA title last year people said, "They are world champions." When the Steelers won the Superbowl, people said, "They are wolrd champions." Are they really "WORLD" champions? Or are they league champions....afterall all of these sports exist elsewhere in the world.

While it is probably a mis nomer given it is not a world competition. Due to the quality of the leagues and the $$. The best players from around the world (Though in the NFL most are still from the US) play in those leagues. MLB and the NBA are now very much international leagues with players from all over the world.

Also as a clarification I don't think I have ever heard the NHL champions declared the world champions. They are call the Stanely Cup Champions after the trophy which is named for Lord Stanley.

well i don't know about the other sports but in the NFL there is no chance that NFL Europe teams or Canadian Teams even stand a chance. In the NBA though they shouldn't say it because there are other countries that actually have good teams. Especially in The NHL cuz Russia has some of the best teams in the world. But i think the world champion is in MLB because most players immigrate to play here. So in NFL and MLB i think they really are the world champions but not in NBA or NHL.

With the exception of hockey I think the point could be made....these leagues have been around a long time when American football, basketball and baseball were only played here hockey on the other hand...Never really heard world champions but if they do call them that its probably from the other sports having world championships

The team that wins these championships are the World Champions. Every team in each league has forign players on them. In Basketball, there are canadian, chinese, german, french, african and many other nationalities. In baseball, this is also the case. In the world baseball classic, Japan won and there are several Japanese players in the U.S. The same is true for football. The NFL has NFL Europe and the better players play in the U.S. Canada has a Indoor football league, but we all know the NFL has better players and better teams. In any event, players from any country can play on these teams.

They are called World Champions because thats what they are. If only one country was represented on every team in every league, then this would not be true. I live in St. Louis and our Cardinals Baseball team has Japs, dominicans, puerto ricans, canadians, coloumbians ect. Our Rams football team has europeans, africans, canadians, mexicans ect. Our Blues Hockey team has canadians, germans, frenchies, slovaks, russians, ect.

The team that wins the World Cup in soccer will be world champions, not just German champions because the cup is played in Germany.

Because the leagues in the USA are the premier leagues in the whole world. For football leagues like the CFL and NFL Europe are where the crappy NFL players go. For baseball, players from places like Japan have to be one of the top players there to be an average player here in the U.S.. Players come from all over the world to play in the NBA. You know why? Because it's the world's best basketball league.

First off don't call them American sports because there are teams in both America and Canada. And yes there are leagues all over the world but the NBA NFL MLB and NHL are the best of those leagues. you don't see us saying our Soccer is the world camps because we know that our soccer isn't world champs.

Because we are ( with the exception of baseball ) NO COUNTRY comes close. Do you really think a national team from another country could beat the Pistons in a best of 7....or the Steelers in football...and with the exception of Japan and the Latin American countries they could'nt do it in basball either. Other countries are too busy trying to win Soccers "World Cup"

I guess it’s because many of these sports are dominant in the United States. Also they are pretty unique. I don’t think anywhere else it is allowed to dope for basketball players... no wonder you can’t see the stars in the Olympics. I think it’s ok to say they are the world champions in American Football.

They have players from around the World so you could argue they are World Champs. Truth is that it is just a good marketing gimmick.
