You can hack it...mask your IP with theirs and spam other people until their ISP takes them offline...and a few other bad things.

On the brighter side...you can also use it to gain access for remote tech support (google or yahoo search "remote access" or "remote desktop" for more) or if you have a good base of programming experience...write a small chat program that connects via IP only and is nearly unoticeable to your computer teacher so you can chat without him/her ever knowing about it... ;)

Well, knowing someone's IP address is like knowing where they live - you know where to find them, but as to whether they leave their front door is open, or keys to their house accessible is a different matter.

If the person's computer isn't well protected, then yes - having knowledge of their IP address leaves them vulnerable to be attacked. However, if they have all the security measures in place, then they should not have anything to worry about.

In either case, unless you are very good at what you do, it is near impossible to break into (or 'hack') somone's computer and not leave any evidence of your presence (i.e. trails that lead to you). So don't bother!
