The heat sink(sp?) fell off the motherboard of my computer. The piece that holds the clips broke & the clips won't hold anymore. Do I need a whole new computer or can I just replace the motherboard? This is a custom built computer, I don't know the specs of my video card, etc as of yet, but when I do, can I just buy a new motherboard & replace the other one?
And the computer is on it's side, gravity is holding the heat sink in place and the computer seems to be working fine. How long will this hold? Please help!

Thanks for all the answers so far. There are two little black plastic bars that the clips hold into on either side - that is what broke (both top & bottom) and the clips have nothing to clip into. My friend (whose going for a degree in Networking) built the thing a few years ago - custom case, good video card, runs Windows Professional, and is really built for fun - gaming, cd/dvd burning etc. So I guess I can take it to Best Buy or someplace similar and see if they have a motherboard that will fit all my components? Cuz with the answers I've gotten so far, with those clips not holding, I will indeed need a new motherboard.
Thanks for all the help so far!! You guys rock!

You can probably replace the motherboard, if only you can find that one to replace it. That MB was probably only available for a year or so.
Getting a new motherboard could mean getting a new processor chip, new memory and possibly other new parts. This will end up costing more than just buying a DELL. So consider that option, if you can't find an exact replacement.
In the meantime, keep your computer on it's side with GRAVITY holding the Heatsink in place. As long as you don't move the comptuer, it should be just fine. But it will be difficult to use the CD drive.
Good luck

As long as the heat sink is in contact with the processor you are fine. I would not leave it that way though. Someone else could come along and move the computer. Are you saying that the plastic attached to the motherboard is broken? If so then the motherboard does need to be replaced. Although there may be a product that is sticky. If it is just a broken heatsink, then that is only a few dollars to replace.

Probably won't hold long and is probably not good on the computer,
you might be able to get the heat sink clip fixed, you should take it to a professional and see if it can be fixed before you go out and buy a new motherboard.

I'd just get a new one. You can replace the motherboard, but it sounds like you'd need someone else to put it in for you. And if something went wrong installing it, you'd be out that much more money. Anyway, you'd better do something quick. I wouldn't trust a heat sink being held on by gravity to keep the processor cool for long.

you can replace the motherboard but if you are running any flavor of Windows you will most likely have to wipe your hard drive and reload. Windows doesn't like you to change the motherboard or processor on it. you might be able to take your PC to like a Geek Squad or something like that and have them install a new heat sink for you though.

You can buy a new mother board and you want to fix the heat sink as soon as possible, heat can damage vital parts in the computer and it makes it work harder.

You can actually go to any computer store and bring the parts that broke, they will sell you a new one for like 5 dollars. It will come with the glue to mount it back the way it should be.
