Shift \ will give you |. Its to the left of the space bar or to the right of the plus/equal sign.
You can also go to www.quickmath.com, click on Solve under Equations, then type in something like |x + 5| = 7, and it will give you -12 and 2

TYPE "alt + 124" number and then "alt+124" again
ie press alt key and simultaneously type 124; release alt key, type your number and then repress alt together with 124.
eg for number five :|5|
