recieved a bill for damaged rental equip damage was not my fault what are my legal options

If you have homeowners or renter's insurance, maybe check with them and see if they cover the damage. But yeah, whether or not its your fault, you're responsible for any damage while its in your posession.

You didn't give much information on what was damaged.

I suggest you look over your paperwork for the rental. Did it show the damage? If not why? Didn't you notice it was damaged when you took possession? If you can prove it was damaged before, then you need to present that.

pretty much it the damage occurred while it was in you had the equipment you are responsible for the damage
