Most likely, it does mean that he's married. They usually wear the silver ring on the right hand during the engagement, and then move it to the left hand after the wedding.

It is a misconception that arab men don't wear gold. There are muslim arabs that do (just as there are arab muslim women that don't cover their hair); some do it for fashion, some do it under the notion that if they're wearing silver, it could be misconstrued that he's not really married- but wearing the ring as a personal preferance (more on this later). It isn't Islamically correct or terribly commonplace, but happens nevertheless.

Also, there are christian arab men who wear gold. No one really balks at this much, because it isn't forbidden in their religion.

Some muslims reject the notion of wearing a wedding ring as a required tradition altogether, on the basis that it isn't really an Islamic habit. You will therefore find some men that wear a silver ring just because they like it; more often than not, you will find them wearing it on the pinky finger (it looks like the western version of a highschool class ring, but usually with a larger stone in the middle). So if you are wanting to know if they are married or not, you will have to straight out ask! It won't be offensive; arab culture values family life and they are often keen to talk about family-based subjects (it's generally polite to ask after a friends' family when greeting them anyway).

to clairfy what someone posted to you about it being a misconception that arab men dont wear gold, well that is false.
it is haram (forbidden) for muslim men to wear gold. it is arrogant, and forbidden. yeah there may be some that do it for fashion, but shame on them, that is the reason its forbidden.
silver is worn and most wear it on the left hand. if you suspect this man is married, why not ask. dont put him and yourself in a situation that could be deemed as inappropriate!

It depends. If it looks like a wedding ring and is in the ring finger, then he is married. If it does not look like a wedding ring and is in the little or ring finger, then he might be wearing it for religious reasons as a tradition among Sunni Muslims.

He is mst likely married because in Muslim tradition, you may not wear gold, so people sustitue silver. The best way to find out though, is to ask him.
