First words that come to mind.. Satay, curry, elephants and shopping.

I've been there, and found it to be a very friendly country, and nothing like I expected.

Like many I was a bit guarded about going since it is an Islamic country, but it took less than a day for most of my fears to disappear, and by the time I left... all of the fears were gone.

Malaysia, is a developing country, but not a 3rd world country. Meto areas are very modern, offering everything you would in anywhere else. Rural areas like in most places are a bit more rustic.

As to being poor, not near as poor as other places. The exchange rate for their currency (the Ringgett) is about 3.60 to the U.S. dollar, which can give it the appearance of being poor, but what you must figure in is the pay scale and cost of living. What I found was that that the numbers matched the U.S. for the most part. Example: a person working on the front desk of the hotel took home 900RM a month, the American counter takes home about $900. a month.

As to the culture, it's a very interesting mix... again not that different than the U.S. in theory. Over the years they absorbed immigrants, today the main there races are Malay, Chinese and Tammal (Indian). Then of course there is still a lot of the British influence (only received independence back in 1957). Each group has managed to keep much of it's home land traditions, yet still blend together with the others.

The right to freedom of religion is a big thing. While the county is officially Islamic, each person has the freedom to choose. Today only about 60% of the county is Islamic, other being Buddhist, Hindu and Christian. There is another religion similar to Buddhist that is common, but sorry I forgot the name.

You get the idea, with this mix you can experience a lot of different cultures in one place. Not to mention the wonderful assortment of foods, all for a very reasonable price.

While the cities are like most any other in the world, I was impressed with the fact the government has protected much of their jungles. This is one of their best resources!

Of course there are some things that need improvement... Their driving!! It was by far the worst I've ever seen. Lanes have no meaning, motorbikes weave in and out throwing caution to the wind.

Lack of western toilets. While places that depend on tourists, will often have at least one western stall, you can't always depend on it. Not to mention the lack of paper, and over all cleanness.

A year ago there were some issues of overall cleanness, such as people throwing their garbage/trash in the ditches. However this situation is showing noticeable improvement.

As for the issue of terrorists, I'm sure there are a few, but on the other hand in today's time most any country will have a few. I never felt any threat while there, and I was there for a year.

Bottom line thought of Malaysia, a great place to visit!

i asked this same question a couple of days ago and i got nothing..

well since i'm malaysian i'll give you my point of view.. if you're malaysian you'd probably heard of it.Two parties.. one ruling the other opposing.. the ruling is dwindling because no one is doing their job and all they do is bicker in parliment over nonsense issues.. the oppositon tries to get stuff going but unfortunately the ruling party won't budge unless an election comes around.
