In order to send a satellite around the moon it would take a lot stronger rockets than currently used to bring them into orbit. Geostationary orbit is at a mere 36000km altitude, 1/11 of the distance to the moon. Satellites brought into geostationary don't have to overcome the escape velocity of earth.

Any launch anomaly that could send a satellite around the moon has sufficient fuel and power left to send it into the wanted orbit.
