They are/were the best in their class of guitar player(s).
Hendrix was great but so is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, or Clapton, or Knopfler, etc.
But they're all different in their styles and therefore can't be fairly lumped into the same category and judged.

Between the two I would give Jimmy Hendrix the nod. Santana is great in his own way but Hendrix really shook up the world with his playing, which was totally revolutionary at the time.

In my opinion its Muddy Waters, one of the first to even use the electric guitar. But moving forward, Eric Clapton has both Hendrix and Santana beat

Well Quite honestly, it really depends on what genre of music, because each genre chooses their own "parent" of the instrument. For example, Blues guitar, BB King is undoubtedly the father. For Country music, RJ Jacinto is considered the country’s father of guitar. Personally, I feel Jimmy was a much more talented artist, and should be deemed the "father" if one must choose from the two...BUT ofcourse that is only because most of the world has not checked out the guitarist from my band, which I encourage you to do so... www.groups.yahoo.com/group/3latedremnant , so the decision is truly one you must make on your own.
