Best Constipation Cures

Lots & lots of water will get you going most times short-term. In addition, if you've just been on antibiotics or something else which can mess with your gut, active yogurt cultures can work wonders. Dannon has something they're calling "probiotic" which is essentially a high-culture yogurt which works really well.

Long-term, what you want to do is check your fiber intake and fluid intake to make sure you are getting enough of both. Benefiber supplement is pretty easy to add to food, but it's really better if you can get fiber from things like celery and other fresh veggies. Prune juice and such rely on sugar absorption and fluid intake to stimulate a bowel movement, but whole fresh fruit would really be a better choice, especially if you're trying to watch calories or glucose levels.

If you've recently made changes to your diet, such as adding fiber, it can cause some short-term bowel changes. If that's the case, drinking extra water should take care of it.

If you have chronic constipation without any other factors (such as pregnancy) then you should probably go consult a doctor. There are some drugs out there for bowel issues, just not many. Your gut is usually pretty resilient.

By the way, you may wish to check your caffeine levels - have you made any drastic changes in caffeine intake lately? (For instance, you had final exams and were drinking 10-12 cups of coffee a day, then cut back to 2? Or changed brands of coffee/black tea/switched to decaf?) This can definitely affect your gut but it's something people seldom think about.

You may also wish to avoid mint-family herbal teas during this time, since mint will slow gut action.

Whatever you do if you are pregnant do not take a laxative. If you are pregnant and take a laxative you can involuntarily induce labor. You can take an enima by rectum though, works in a matter of minutes. If you do not get the constapation corrected you can get fecal impactation and that is very hard, some have to have the doc remove the matter with his fingers, not only painful but could be embarresing for the person.
Drink plenty of water, water, water.
Eat oatmeal or a fiber induced meal. Try to find some food that is a fiber meal with a fiber recommendation on the box.

Amazingly for myself what works is a glass of milk and about 3 Oreo cookies... sorry Nabisco. Takes about 20-30 minutes and is a whole lot easier than an enema.

Also, if you are prone to being constipated, avaoiding eating large amounts of cheese... it aggravates the situation. But it's a good thing to know if the problem on the other side of yours ever kicks-in.

Include high fiber fruits and vegetables to your diet. You could take a natural product called Papaya Enzime from Vitamin World, can find it in GNC.
Eat pears, pitted prunes, oatmeal, banana(in the morning) and drink a lot of water.

I had to help my late husband with this problem caused by medications. They sell glycerin suppositories for babies and adults. They're very safe and were an enormous help to him... and to me at times. Best wishes to a very uncomfortable problem.
