I always thought it meant "dooms" day, but i did so research but oddly enough it does not mean anything. other web sites says it means "Day" Day. In military dictionary it stands for "Day", so its actually "Day"-Day

After being in the military for quite some time.....I actually know what D-Day meant, and still means.
It means the same thing as A-Day, B-Day, & C-Day.
It's the TIMELINE in a military action.
Think of it as a OUTLINE, with "D" being the day the "action" takes place.
For instance;
A. Physical Readiness
1. All Personnel Accounted For
2. All Equipment Account For
B. Transportation
1. Schedules coordinated
2. Vehicles ready
C. Staging
1. Everything is where it needs to be
2. All personnel in place
D. Action (attack)
So, there ya go. A-Day, B-Day, C-Day, & D-Day
(By the way, that is not actually what the outline says, but you get the idea)
The most famous D-Day of WWII is the only one we really hear about.

D-Day is the indasion day. The date was not finalised until a few days before it happened. However, detailed chronological planning was possible by saying D-2, D Day (the actual day) D+1, D+3 etc

D-Day is a British military term, so there is more than one D-day. The most famous one is, of course, 6/6/44, the Invasion at Normanday. Oddly enough, "D" stands for day. By the way, the time of the attack is referred to as "H-hour."

I would say it stands for deliverance day because on that day the Allies invaded France and eventually defeated Hitler's Germany.

Peach is right. D-day was actually just a designation. However some soldiers made up nicknames for it like "The Day of Days," "Destruction Day," "Demolition Day," etc.
