All media will be lost" I've got windows XP, windows media player 10. now when I go into my computer it dosnt show that i even have a drive E and yes everything is plugged in correctly. Also drive C is formatted FAT32 and my external drive E was formatted NTFS. Is this a problem

Well, the first thing I would do is convert your C drive to NTFS. I want you to know this isn't your problem but it's something you should do anyway. I just can't stand it when a laptop (I build my own desktops) comes out of the box with a FAT32 formatted drive. To convert C to NTFS go to Start > Run, type cmd and press enter. At the prompt enter the following command "convert C: /FS:NTFS" without the quotes. This will non-destructively convert drive C to the NTFS format. Note you will not be able to go back to FAT32 but NTFS has performance enhancements and better security features.

Okay, as far as drive E goes, I haven't got a clue. It could have been any number of things. When you plug in the drive does it spin up? When you plug it in, does it do anything at all? If it isn't spinning up, the drive is dead. I had this happen, one day I got a "delayed file write error" so I tried a new USB cable, that worked for all of five minutes, it happened again, the drive stopped showing up in My Computer and it just died. I tried a new control board but that didn't work either, it went to silicon heaven. You might try a new USB cable but no promises.

The format won't make a difference. XP recognizes both.
Sounds like your USB port isn't behaving. Try shutting down everything for a minute or so then powering back up. Watch the sequences and look for any other telltale signs of a problem.
If the external still doesn't work, take it to another system and connect it up. If that system doesn't see it either then at least you've narrowed-down the troublemaker. Try another cable. If that doesn't fix it then it sounds like your external HDD is fubar'd.

USB is the tactic with assistance from which thepersistent connects/communicates with your pc. USB = accepted serial bus. maximum exterior drives on the marketplace (inexpensive ones) are USB drives. There are different kinds of "connections" you may have for an externalpersistent - which includes SCSI. this may require a particular interface be further on your pc, as maximum own pcs do not have an SCSI interface. the different component about an externalpersistent is which could be what human beings call a thumbpersistent. that's only a small gizmo about the dimensions of a pocket knife that plugs into your USB port. they are frequently about 512Mb to quite a few Gb in skill, require no exterior means and are large for transferring archives between pcs. the bigger 80Gb+ USB drives require means (A/C) and performance a rotating disc interior. those are large for storing really a lot of archives - like photos/song etc.
