They're both pigment in the skin due to UV light aren't they?

I can always tell an artificial tan because it doesn't cover the eyelids at all (I always think it looks a little silly)

Maybe because some people use accelerator/bronzing lotions in the tanning salons, which makes the skin look a bit orange, or unnatural.

I don't know the answer but maybe people are misunderstanding the question? Based on his statement in additional details it sounds like he's asking why outdoor suntans look different from tanning bed suntans.

yes, but a "natural" tan is natural, and an artificial tan is just a close-copy

because a natural tan doesn’t use artificial fillers and is non fat.
