If you or someone else has not been in messing around with the virtual memory settings, then as others have stated you need to free some space on your hard drive. You DO NOT need to reformat like the first answer said. However, I have had a virus that wrote a bunch of junk on my drive until it filled up, you may want to run a acan and find out if this is what is happening as well though I doubt it. I think your best bet is to free up some disk space. If you are running XP go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup, first. If this does not solve your problem you need to delete, move or uninstall programs / files that you don't need on your system. You may also want to Defrag your drive as well. I would also suggest you get Spybot S&D at http://safer-networking.org and run this on your system to get rid of the junk. Good Luck!

Please ignore the remarks made by the Hardware Guy!! The answer he has given is not correct, not funny and is actually quite malicious!!
Virtual Memory settings are controlled by Windows and will from time to time be adjusted to improve the performance of your PC. It should be nothing to worry about!!
However, if this happening a lot then it suggests that your computer does not have enough memory. Start the Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL). Click on the tab marked Performance. You will see lots of numbers!! If the number in the Commit Charge (K) - Peak is higher than Physical Memory (K) - Total, you probably need an extra RAM chip. These figures show how much memory you needed vs the amount you actually have.
There are a number of things that are worth checking. Are you running too many programs at the same time? Do you have a virus? Are there any spyware/adware processes running in the background? Any of these things will cause Windows to use more memory than it actually has.

virtual memory is when the processor tries to create a kind of nonexistent extra memory from already existent memory for disks etc. by continous swapping between buffer and the main or the secondary memory. to avoid this error message and if u dont want to increase ur ram, do this---
1.close down a couple of unnecessary thing seen on the right of the start menu.
2. immediately lower the burden on ur computer by closing a few applications.
or3.Defragment.
4.do not install and run other applications at the same time.

Go to Start Menu - Settings - Control Panel and double click on the "System" icon. Then select the "Advanced" tab an click on "Performance Options". Here you will find reference to your amount of virtual memory and will have the ability to change it (and it will give you a recommended virtual memory size).

The most likely cause is a lack of free disk space. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. The Disk Cleanup wizard will assist you in deleting unneeded files.

Free some space in your hard drive, that's where the virtual memory is allocated. Some processes your computer runs are too big to be allocated in your memory (RAM), so some space in your hard drive is also allocated. This is normal, not a virus, not a spyware, just free some space in your main partition (usually C:\).

acutually, windows adjust virtual memory automatically for you, but you can right click 'my computer' >properties> advanced> performance>virtual memory. click change for paging file size then play with the following options there. i suggest you put 512 as minimun and 1024 as max. if your drive can afford it. then click change, then 'ok' all the way.
if you get a message like this, it means you need to add more memory for your system.
hope this helps,
cheers
