It is probably the hardest thing to do when it involves something major like rape, murder, infidelity, etc. When it is accomplished, it can also give you the most freedom you've felt in a long time. Personally, I don't know how possible it is for us sinful, selfish, vengeance minded people to attain the state of complete forgiveness. It is so difficult to give up your right to get even. You so want to see the other person fall for what they did. Often we don't want to relinquish it. In many ways, I think I have done it before, but I haven't been in a position to say something like; 'well you cheated on me!' (example not real) I think I am still selfish enough and immature enough to let it slip out. The problem is, is that we have long memories and even though we have forgiven them, we haven't forgotten and that will always make us wary of trusting them again. God does it, as Corrie Ten Boom said of forgiveness, God casts our sins into the deepest part of the sea and puts up a no fishing sign. Corrie was a Dutch girl when she was imprisoned by the Germans during WW2 and suffered immeasurably. Tough situation, but great question!

I think the French expression "to know all is to forgive all" is how I feel about it...forgiveness requires complete empathy for the trespasser. Some people say forgiveness isn't possible...they are speaking for themselves...it is possible...I know because I was treated very badly early in my life and I have forgiven the people. But I forgave them for myself...not for them...bitterness is a poison which held inside can only do damage...so if you are trying to forgive someone...do it for yourself to remove the pain from your life...if you take this perspective I think you are likely to be more successful.

Eight Steps To complete Forgiveness:

Step 1: Have the OFFENDER confess specifically to the OFFENDED what was done or said wrong that caused offense.

Step 2: Have the OFFENDING party identify the principle(s) he violated.

Step 3: Have the OFFENDER ask the OFFENDED "How were you wronged when I did (or said)...........?"

Step 4: Have the OFFENDER recall, as best he can, a time when they were wronged/offended by another, in the same way they caused offense.

Step 5: Have the OFFENDER restate their offence(s) wait for the OFFENDED's response.

Step 6: Have the OFFENDER repeat in his own words, the answer given by the OFFENDED

Step 7: Have the OFFENDER ask, "What can I do differently, so I won't hurt you again?"

Step 8: Restitution: What can we do to make you whole?

It is humanly IMPOSSIBLE to completely forget a hurt someone else inflicted on you, but forgiving them lets you move on with your life., and not be eaten alive with the desire for revenge.Let the Lord mete out the just punishment they deserve.

In regards to cheating? Can't be done. The heart will never forgive, even if the mind tries to trick it into believing that it has.

Being able to put whatever ill feelings you had for the outcome of the issue and put it behind you...it's hard to forget but it's something that you must try to do otherwise you would never have completely forgiven that person.
