I can only give you information about Ukraine.

religion- Orthodox Roman Catholic

culture- There are two parts. The first part is the people who live in the cities. They live just like most people in USA. They do tend to take the train and bus more rather than own a car. (gas is very expensive) The other part is the people who live out in the country side. They live a more simplier life. Some of the older people have never left their town. They raise their own chickens, grow their own vegetables, heat their own water for a shower, and they have outhouses. You are cosidered very well off if you have wall paper in your house and you are doing extremely good if you have a telephone.

language- Eastern Ukraine: Russian Western Ukraine: Ukrainian

education- Students start school at around the age of 6, they are taught English at a very young age.

Russia became the Soviet Union in 1922. After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, the Communist Party gain the power. The communist regime was installed. It lasted until 1989-1991. In some countries communism collapsed in 1989 and in others in 1991. Lenin was the first communist ruler in Russia. It was followed by Stalin, after he died. During Stalin's ruling, the communist regime became rougher.

The communist regime - the communist ideology - was propagated (it developed itself) among people through/with the help of propaganda. So, communism implicated a lot, not only in politics, but very much in culture, religion and social life.

Communism was an undemocratic and atheist regime (in some countries many churches were destroyed); priests and believers were persecuted.

The censorship was omnipresent: in social life (there weren't so many places to have fun, there weren't so many TV programs, in some countries you were obligated to shut down the light in you house at 10:00 PM (otherwise you could end up in jail or punished in other ways). The mass of people was poor. There was a small diversity of products (especially concerning food).
The human rights were violated. You were not allowed to say anything against the Communism Party or the Communist regime, because otherwise you were very hard punished, arrested or even killed.

Communism implicated also in education. Children were tought that communism and its rulers are great, it is the regime that must go one. Many books were censored. You were not allowed to write something against the communist regime and all the books were verified before they were published.

There was a permanent fear among people (not only in the Soviet Union, but in all the countries in which the communist regime was installed). It (the communism) made A LOT of psychological damage to everyone. In the Soviet Union, the repressive organ was the Red Army.

The Russians were than and still are Orthodox.
