If you're talking about security look at the lower right of your toolbar while your on the site. If you see an icon resembling a padlock then that section of the site is secure.
If your talking about viability pertaining to the content follow this rule of thumb:
Just because you saw / read it on the Internet does make it the truth.
The beauty of the Net is that normally you have several sites to select from. Scan as many of them a possible until you are more comfortable with what is being stated being factual or not.

There is no way to know for sure, so you have to be careful. Educate your self as much as possible.
Siteadvisor can help. They test web sites for dangerous and annoying content. Then they provide browser plugins that show exactly which sites are safe. Check out the link below.
However, Siteadvisor is no guarantee, so you should still be careful.

Mcafee and other programs always tell me when my computer is under threat. Sometimes you just have to use your best judgement though. There are still allot of scams out there.
