Hamsters are VERY Territorial.

Seperate cages are a must unless they have lived together from birth and even then there are exceptions.

Always separate them! My daughter had two Russian hamsters. We were constantly separating their fights but the pet shop insisted they'd be lonely if we got them each their own cage. WRONG! The larger one injured the smaller one so severely, she died in my hand! It was so sad! It took a while to accept the larger one, but I now understand it wasn't her fault and she did what nature told her to do. She is the sweetest thing now on her own and very friendly, cuddly and comes out of her house when we call her. My husband also recently brought home 2 dwarf hamsters (that were supposed to be the same sex) and we had them in one cage. That didn't last because we quickly had 7 new babies! The pair was male and female and 2 and 1/2 days after the babies were born and I read on the internet to take the dad out, I realized we didn't take him out soon enough because about 18 days later there was yet another litter of 8 babies. I found homes for most but even at 3 weeks old they start to fight so at one point I had 8 cages! As far as care, just make sure to change the bedding and food at least every week if not more often and most important: handle/hold your hammie every day. They will tend to bite if left alone for a long while and need to be reminded they are loved.

Keep them in separate cages. Hamsters can't live together because they will indeed kill each other. They see the other hamster as a threat to their own turf.

One hamster per cage.

Yes, they will attack and kill each other, over anything. Territory, food, does not matter. My husband wanted one...we were talked into getting a friend for it. They were supposed to be the same sex. In less than 6 months we had 30 of them!

Do not buy any more once these cross the rainbow bridge. They live for several years...

Hamsters can very rarely be kept together. As you have found out - they will kill each other. They must be kept in separate cages.
