it was a stupid, wasteful, entirely un-necessary war that virtually wiped out a generation. the cause is generally accepted to be the killing of arch-duke ferdinand by a serbian nationalist, but if the major powers weren't so touchy due to the arms race they were in it wouldn't have been as big an issue.
it started over nothing and ended the same way. Kaiser Wilhelm of germany didn't want to fight anymore, as the english royal family was technically related to him.
the worst part was the treaty of versailles that was imposed on Germany at the end of the war was so crippling to their economy it set the stage for the rise of Hitler and the start of WW2. the whole affair was characterised by waste and stupidity.

Germany started it for world domination. They drew in many nations and it was a bloodbath. Military operations through the air were introduced: The Red Baron. However, the west won the war. The really important thing to realize is that the new League of Nations was founded, a precursor to the United Nations. Countries who won punished the German Nations severely. It led to the rise of the Nazi power, who promised an end to the economic disaster in Germany due to the punishment after WW1.
Since then nations are not punished, but reorganized, realizing that the people do not make the policy of war, but rather, mentally unstable individuals running their nations. Just look at the USA today. The Manhattn Project after WW2 brought tens of thousands of Nazis to the US secretly, people of great infleunce, mental capacity, scientific minds, who upheld the Nazi principles and philospohies. Others fled to South and central America. The favoite best selling book read by Palestinians is Mein Kampf, Hilter's book.

Short Story, True and about a hero!
WWI, The Allies, led by Americans were attacking on some hill in Europe!
On the top of the hill the group of Germans was keeping their post and through their well designed stronghold were killing many allies. They could not find a way to capture the hill; they could not move forward!
Then, the young soldier George Dilvoy (a Greek immigrant from Alatsata) run uphill with his pistol and shooting! The machine guns of the Germans were spitting lead to the brave body! He continue his upward run! He approached the Germans and threw a hand grenade. The Germans were killed and the allies moved forward!
How important was this? What kind of hero Dilvoy was?
Well, Now the US have the National Guard and the Dilvoy Guard! He was living in Somerville Mass
