A fret is the horozontal bar on the neck of the guitair it is usally gold and it sticks up. You hold down the strings and the further down the neck you go the higher the pitch gets.

I hope this is easy enough to understand: you push down on the string and the frets are the metal deals going into the neck. when you push down a string into a fret it shortens up the string length making the sound higher and each of the frets makes it go a half of a step higher.
