If his kid really got killed in Iraq, I think it would be worse for you to brand him a liar when he's being open and honest, versus you just losing some face by believing him when he's lying.

(The first will drive him away forever from you and your values; the second just means things stay where they were before.)

This is an opportunity for you to patch up the relationship and help your neighbor in his time of grief.

It's very possible that his hurt and anger is making him reconsider his political values. Maybe after the pain goes away, he'll drop back to his old way of thinking, maybe not. (If he does, it still means he's telling the truth NOW about how he feels, though. Feelings are funny that way.)

If you are secure, don't worry about yourself. What can he do to "hurt" you? Just keep asking him questions about his feelings, what he believed before, why this is making him rethink things, what such changes might mean for him.

Most important, ask him about his son -- let him talk about his kid and how great he was and the things they did together.

If you're a "bleeding heart liberal" :) then this is the perfect situation for you to love this guy, even if he wasn't very loving of you before.

It's your chance not only to help him, but to show him that your beliefs actually have some weight and work to make America a better place.

I don't think that you need to worry about trusting him. What does that mean really? Does his political views really affect whether he is a good neighbor? Can you still trust him to bring in your mail when you are on vacation? He is hurting right now and now sees everything in a different light due to his loss. Stand by him but I don't think it is necessary to beat the politics bush (no pun intended) to death. He may change his views back after he grieves for a while...and that should in no way determine whether you can "trust" him or not. But on another note, They say that "when you know better, you do better". So he may have just been enlightened by a different truth than he had before. Life is a series of learning experiences. We all change our views on things after we learn different facts, etc. Doesn't mean that we are not trustworthy.

There is one thing that can be said about almost everyone in this world.
Nothing and no one matters one bit until it effects them.
Then everyone in the world needs to change everything...

Sadly his flag waving days ended with his sons life and now he is against the war and the government for send his son there.

I doubt it.
Take it easy and see how he feels.
It's funny you know. So many members of the religious right are so bloody gung-ho about going off and killing however many foreigners they want and then they get personally affected and turn into anti-war campaigners.
Is it just me or does this demonstrate a lack of empathy and ability to relate to others?

He's just mad and bitter. Now, according to him, you are BOTH anti-everything.

Ask him how he would like it when the next President of the US is a Mexican... see how that goes over. That's what he really should be worrying about. I could get someone like this raving like a lunatic day and night.

Take my advice: Leave the partisan political games to the neanderthals. There's no real difference between the major political parties. For all it matters, both are corrupt and an't be trusted.

Live outside of the politics... you'll be happier.

I think what matters is not which party or President is leading the country, but who will be bringing the people happiness.
