In addition to the antiviral programs mentioned, why don't you consider a proactive approach to viruses and malware as well?
Take a look at: http://www.sandboxie.com. It's free for non-commercial use, Windows 2000 and later and is 310KB. in size.
One user commented: "I'm happy to say Sandboxie provided full protection. Once I stopped all sandboxed processes and erased all sandboxed files, there were no active malware products left on my PC."
It isolates your "real" PC from infection.
The advantage with this program is therefore, clear: Any spyware, trojans, keyloggers or other malware products that infected your PC while browsing will be eliminated.
There's nothing simpler than isolating some questionable processes in order to prevent infection.
It's a simple solution but worthy of a trial.

Avast is a good antivirus...though there will always be others that will claim theirs is better. It's really a personal opinion on which is better than another (most of the time).
AVG, Avast and Antivir are all good antivirus programs.
If you want free, open-source antivirus programs, you can get ClamWin Antivirus (no real-time scanning) and attach it to WinPooch (real-time scanner that can be attached to ClamWin). It's 2 programs...but takes up a little bit less space than the other 3 (i think).

Avast is a good program. I think AVG is better and is recommend by Kim Komando to her radio listeners. You get the same AV protection as the pay version. You don't get a lot of the bells and whistles of the pay version. It is updatable with free updates.
Also, I recommend you use this program with you AV and AS programs. It is not a stand alone AV/AS program, but really does a great job working with the others.

Avast is okay. I don't think it's the best but that's just my personal opinion. I like (and use) AVG Free, http://free.grisoft.com/ but Avast and AVG aren't your only free choices there is also Anti-Vir, http://www.free-av.com/ but it does not support automatic updates unlike AVG and Avast which download updates automatically.
