The most obvious answer is to be far away from them. Have a radio that alerts you to what authorities are advising. Have a full tank of gas and escape routes planned in advance.

As far as nuclear: time, distance, and shielding. Most worry is from inhaling dust. So a high efficiency particulate gas mask would be of benefit. Also a low range Geiger counter sensitive to beta radiation would be handy to check for contaminated areas and food. If you are near a nuclear reactor and are worried about that, having potassium iodide (KI) pills on hand to block your thyroid from radioactive iodine uptake is also a good idea.

Chemical accidents are far more deadly and harder to guard against. I would add a charcoal filter to that particulate filter on the mask. Make sure the mask covers your eyes as well as your nose and mouth. If you have prior warning, duct tape for your windows and doors. Not a good idea to stay in place - evacuation is best.

Hope this helps.

evacuation is the typical protocol. If you live near a potential hazard, ask your local civil preparedness director or fire marshall what evacuation routes you should use in the event of such an emergency. Keeping a gas mask in the house may be a good idea too, particularly if there are some nasty and potentially airborne chemicals in mass quantity nearby. In a major emergency, however, you do not want to stay in your house because most likely it will not offer any real protection against chemicals, and certainly not against radiation.

Get under secure cover,
Sit down,
Pull your knees up into 'crash position',
Put your hands behind your head,
Put head between your knees,
Kiss your asse goodbye.
;-)
