Hey, well, apart from the seemingly sarcasticness of some of the people they are right, and there are lots of people that can go into a coma *seemingly* for no reason.
One of the reasons for this (which I think is what you want to know-lol) is that there is a problem with the functioning in the brain. There is a very important structure within the brain called the *reticular formation*. This is basically part of the brain that awakens the rest of the brain to allow us to think and feel independently of our primordial instincts. So, it may be that a genetic or biochemical malfunction occured within this, leading to a coma.

The USA is a HUGE country with MILLIONS of people. I'm sure that there are dozens of Americans who go into a coma every day. You really need to provide more details if you want an answer.

How long ago do you mean? What state was she in? what was her name? etc.

_Addendum_
I've been letting the question ruminate, because I remember there was a case in the 70s and it finally came to me!

I don't know the young lady in question so I can't offer any information. If you want to read a good book about a person in a coma read Elizabeth Berg's book "Range of Motion", I just finished it and I thought it was a lovely book.
