Has anybody read Eucalyptus by Murray Bail? Can anyone explain the ending to me??

The book's pretty obscure - I read it waiting and waiting for it to grab me... It never did. The ending in particular struck me as meaningless but maybe I'm missing something...

I have not read it but a film version of Eucalyptus, starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, is expected sometime this year. Perhaps it may clarify the ending? The following site has several reviews that might help as well.
