.mp3 is surely better to compress your files and is more widely accepted than the .wma format . Get a good encoder like Switch (http://www.nch.com.au) where you can convert songs to any format .
MP3
(MPEG-1 layer 3)Playable in portable MP3 players, or in programs like Winamp, RealPlayer or Windows Media Player; recent audio CD and DVD playersThe most widespread form of audio on the Internet; usually downloaded directly, though it can be streamedMaintains high quality at low bitrates, compressing to 12:1 of waveform audio; streamableMost audio CD players will not play MP3s burned onto a CD - a separate program is needed to decompress the files into WAV before burningThe bitrate is variable, but typically files are saved at 128kbps - about 1mb per 1min musicDeveloped under sponsorship by MPEG, formalized by ISO .
WMA
(Windows Media Audio) Windows Media Player; becoming increasingly widespread on the web Steaming or downloaded 64kbps files sound just as good as 128kbps MP3 files and are half the size; streamable Not all audio software and portable devices recognize this format, or will be allowed to due to proprietary restriction .

WMA can compress WAV quite a bit.... like 5 to 10 times.
WMA is better than mp3. Just get a good converter like DBPowerAmp and TEST IT YOURSELF. Wma's are smaller and have a better sound quality per MB than mp3's. I also have a lot of experience with producing recordings. Believe me, WMA is better than MP3.
I also run a duel boot system on my computer. One is WinXP, and the other is Ubuntu (Linux based). There are win32 codec packs for Linux systems. I know, I run them.
If you are looking for pure sound quality, WAV is the way to go. Of course, it is the LARGEST file, too.
Hope this helps

This is very subjective.
The purist nerds will argue that for a given compression rate WMA (especially if using VBR) is gives better quality.
I've done lots of side by side listening tests and to be honest I find it hard to tell the difference.
I mainly stick with MP3 for music because it is less proprietary and will hopefully still be around in years to come. With the price of storage dropping all the time then saving a few bites here and there is a waste of time!
