DO NOT get an Iguana UNLESS you are willing to be in it for the duration. If I had realised the time, money and effort that was involved I would have got a goldfish instead. Nothing can prepare you for how huge they grow and too many people abandon them when they realise how much care is involved in keeping an adult iggy!
I recommend a ghecko or a water dragon.

Iguanas and chameleons are far from easy and both bite. For first lizard i would say a gecko in a secure setup, simply make sure cat isnt in the room while you are handling or letting out gecko. Small, friendly and easy to care for.

A bearded dragon (big, costly setup, quite a bit of work) or leopard geckos (small setup, animal and setup very affordable, very easy care).

If you have a cat, you will need SECURE lids, and a way of securing the basking light, if you use one. Cats are not to be trusted around lizards, no matter how tame they are.

If you have lots of time, money and space iguannas do make good pets. But, to properly house one and raise it as a healthy pet requires thousands of dollars and much time. Proper lighting, heating, humidity, specialist vet, fresh foods, etc. They are also very long lived pets, so I don't recommend starting with one. Get some literature about lepord geckos or bearded dragons. Good place to start. If your more ambitious, look into Chinese Water Dragons. They are larger, carnivors (more fun to watch them eat) and get much larger. They also cost more to house and feed, so take that into account.

If you get a lizard, get an iguana. They are generally docile and easy to handle. However, I would recommend a good snake like a corn snake, which can be handled easier and are generally more interactive with people than lizards are.

if you keep the lizard in a secured tank with a lid, the cat wont get to it. as long as you have adequate ventilation, the lid can stay shut, and having the right equipment like heat lamp, the lizard will spend most of its time asleep under the light. they can be great as pets though.

Bearded dragons are great pets, they do not bite no matter what, i have 2, one which is a year old and its fun to watch it run about the floor and it loves to sit and watch tv and my other is a baby and 10wks old. they really are great to watch and hold. I have 2 cats and they like to watch the dragon but i just lock them out the room to let the dragon run about for a while.

I have 4 cats and several lizards.

Lizards that are great for beginners are Bearded Dragons and Uromastyx. They require a large tank, overhead heat from a regular lightbulb and a Special UVB bulb for reptiles.

African fat tail Geckos- they're great pets- not slimmy or rough easy maintenance and do not get too big
Keep their cage covered and they'll be fine- If for some reason the cat gets them- they usually bite the tails off and they will grow back (know from experience )

Get a leopard gecko............ they're sweet, tamable, and very easy to take care of. All they require is a tank, heating, food, water, a good substrate (ground covering), and some hiding places.

I've had my leopard gecko for almost 5 years now (they can live to be 20) and he's a sweety. Never tries to bite me. :)
