Not sure where the previous poster got his info from. 8 years ago, both Win3.1 and WFW3.11 were both in the grave. And neither of them, or XP, are network operating systems.

An operating system is simply software that allows you to use a computer. It provides the basic interface allowing you to install application programs and the driver base for peripheral equipment.

A network operating system is a customized operating system that provides features for operating a network. Such features inlcude communications protocols, a means of controlling security and typically some sort of directory service for locating network resources such as users, computers, servers, printers, etc.

You can't always compare operating systems to network operating systems. Arguably you could use Windows Server 2003 as a desktop OS; it has all the basics needed for an OS. But Novell Netware 4.x is useless as an OS platform; you can't even manage the network from the server console.

well, about 8 years ago Windows 3.1 was the Standard operating system. It was made for single user PC's.

then people wanted to network and it wasn't quite suited for that. so ms released Windows 3.11

today Windows XP is both a single user and a network OS.
