A Barn is a unit used to measure the collision cross sectional area of a nucleus for reactions. In other words, if I fire a particle at the nucleaus of an atom, what is the effective cross sectional area presented by the nucleus for me to hit.

A Barn is 1 E -24 square centimetres, and is approximately the actual cross sectional area of a typical nucleus. However, very few collisions with nuclei lead to reactions, and a Barn is effectively a measure of the probability that I will hit the nucleus when I shoot at it (this is quantum mechanics after all). As a results most nuclear cross sections are measure in millibarns.

The term Barn was coined as what - among physicist - passes as a joke. This explains why physicist rarely get invited to cocktail parties.

A unit of area equal to , 10^-28 sq.metres abbreviated b or bn. The name derives from a humorous comparison with a saying sometimes applied to those with poor aim, "you couldn't hit the broadside of a barn." The barn is typically used to measure the cross section for nuclear reactions. For example, the elastic scattering cross section for thermal neutrons on hydrogen is 20.47 barn.

I can't believe you asked that!!
A Barn is a structure where farm animals are kept. They use it more in the winter than summer, of course. Any other stupid questions??
